It starts with a lie. The kind we've all told - to a former acquaintance we can't quite place but still, for some reason, feel the need to impress. The story of our life, embellished for the benefit of the happily married lawyer with the kids and the lovely home.
And the next thing you know, you're having dinner at their house, and accepting an invitation to join them on holiday - swept up in their perfect life, the kind you always dreamed of...

Which turns out to be less than perfect. But by the time you're trapped and sweating in the relentless Greek sun, burning to escape the tension all around you - by the time you start to realise that, however painful the truth might be, it's the lies that cause the real damage...

... well, by then, it could just be too late.

The truth is, we all tell lies

I was confident I'd enjoy this book having read Durrant's other books but would the cover blurb of "Grabs you from the first page and never lets you go" prove true for me this time? Well the answers a resounding YES - I don't think I read this book so much as devoured it!

In short, Paul is a washed up writer & womaniser who uses his charm to scrounge & sponge his way through life. Lying to get what he wants is another of his traits but on accepting an invitation to holiday in Greece, he finds himself tightly tangled in a web of his own making, one that becomes harder & harder to extricate himself from.

It was a surprise to me that the protagonist was male, I don't know why, just assumed it would be otherwise but it was a nice change from all the unreliable female narrators that I keep coming across.
The story is...& I'm quoting the cover blur again as its so apt IMHO..."Tense, darkly funny and morally complex". As the story builds so does the sense of unease - you know there's
something off but its hard to put your finger on just who is hiding what or why. Which takes me to the conclusion...

...now as anyone who has read my reviews will know, I'm more often than not let down by the end of a book however much I may have enjoyed it. Well guess what? This was the perfect ending for this tale to my mind & it left me with a satisfied smile 😀

Started reading this one today before bed and I’m already on page 50! Currently trying to decide if I want to stay up late - it’s definitely got me hooked from page one and as it’s been so long since I’ve read a book which has gripped me like this, I feel I should take advantage and continue :D

Stayed up until the wee hours of the morning to finish this! Became one of those books that I begrudged having to do anything else because I just wanted to keep reading to find out what happened. The main character is despicable but I absolutely loved watching as he got deeper and deeper into his lies and wondering how he’d get out of it.

After telling my sister about this book, she now wants to borrow it :)
