Fellside is a maximum security prison on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors. It's not the kind of place you'd want to end up. But it's where Jess Moulson could be spending the rest of her life.

It's a place where even the walls whisper.

And one voice belongs to a little boy with a message for Jess.

Will she listen?

Reading the rather sparse back cover blurb you might, like I did, be fooled into thinking this is a "haunted house" tale - well it isn't! The location is the women's prison where Jess Moulson finds herself sent after a fire in her flat kills a young neighbour.

Full of guilt & remorse Jess finds it hard to live with herself until she's visited by the ghost of Alex, the boy who died & finds herself with a new purpose in life. Her desperation to help is almost palpable at times - you can be pitying her one minute but the next be shaking your head in frustration at her actions. While she certainly accumulates enemies, her worst enemy is so often herself.

The prison has all the (maybe stereotypical) characters you'd expect - the corrupt guard, the inmate who "runs" the wing, the ineffectual governor, etc etc - but they come over convincingly so the claustrophobic & often dangerous atmosphere of life behind bars is well portrayed. There's quite a contrast between the down-to-earth yet brutal prison side of the tale & Alex's supernatural one yet the two merge together well despite their disparity.

I was thoroughly hooked throughout - it's been a while since I literally couldn't put a book down! - & I'll definitely be adding other books by this author to my wishlist.
