A good psychological thriller by one of the masters of this genre. From the start, we know who killed who. But what we learn is how it happened, what were the events that lead to this horrible crime. And that’s where Ruth Rendell excelled: she was able to create such an atmosphere, an understanding of the lives involved and what was the trigger to the crime. Nothing was overdone and sometimes, we couldn’t help feeling sorry for the murderer, tough it shouldn’t be the case. As I said before about this author, it all lies with the psychology and the circumstances, the gruesome details are almost secondary to the understanding of the story. I truly enjoyed reading this novel.
