Into the Water: A Novel

A few years ago, I read Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train back to back over the course of a few days. As a result, I spent the next week totally paranoid that everyone I saw was secretly plotting to murder someone. I unintentionally ended up reading Sharp Objects and Into the Water within a few days of each other so hopefully I won't have a repeat of that weeklong paranoia again!
As with The Girl on the Train, there are affairs, deaths, lying, and all kinds of shadiness. In this case, it's all centered around Nel and her 15 year old daughter's best friend Katie. Both of them drowned in the same part of the river in apparent suicides just a few months apart and their families are left wondering why. Nel's estranged sister Jules returns to their hometown to look after Nel's daughter Lena who also has secrets.
