found this book discarded in the basement of my building. Somebody cut out some of the page numbers, and the spine is a little fragile, but it's still got some life left in it.
On the front cover it says "one of the FAMOUS books of this century"
I'm always intrigued when I find old books that were household names in their heyday, but no one in my time has ever heard of them.
It's hard to tell what the book is even about. The back cover merely says:
" The name of Axel Munthe was spread throughout the civilized world on the publication of this book in 1929.
Millions of people have read it-in forty languages.
The sales of the English 75th printing were greater than sales during the first year of publication.
It is unabridged"
Oh brother. Despite this self-aggrandizing and astonishingly vague blurb, Axel Munthe seems like he was a decent sort of fellow judging by his Wikipedia entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axel_Munthe
