A remote valley farm in British Columbia during the war is home to a host of eccentric but familiar characters: Filthy Billy; Nora, a native girl in bells; and something indefinable - shape shifter or ghost - who haunts 15-year-old Beth Weeks.

I'm not really how to score this novel, so might just stick with a review. I really liked the way the writing was a mixture of reality and folk tale. There are some great characters who I really warmed to like Filthy Billy, and also some really awful people like Beth's father. I found it difficult to read about the way Beth's father abuses her and her mother doesn't try to help.
Thanks so much for sending me this one keeta1. I think I'll take it along to the next Old Gang meet up.

Caught at the meetup, thanks.

This was an uncomfortable read. I kept hoping that Beth would use her gun to deal with the various human predators.
I’m never very keen on mystical goings on in books and I would have enjoyed this more as a straightforward tale, without the invisible creatures making paths through the grass. That said, I liked the clear and evocative writing style and I did want to finish the book.
Turtle Valley is not a community I would have wanted to live in. I would have definitely used my gun.
