Having read part of The Gulag archipelago, I sought this book out to lend clarity to it. It is a short account of the life of one day in the camp and the minutiae of that life is recounted perfectly. At times it felt dead flat which reflects the life draining nature of the inhumane, but the descriptions of the men themselves felt at once familiar as they fell into roles almost expected of them-there is always a preacher, a rat, a ghost, a jobsworth.. and Shukhov was always going to survive as the good guy. A classic work that is equally a historical account.
Left in the apartment at Pestana Gardens. Happy 📖 although to be honest it's not a 😊 read at all. Welcome to book crossing anyhow
