7 stars: Good

From the back cover: Groomed by the ruthless politician and Sith Lord who would be Emperor, Governor Wilhuff Tarkin rises through the Imperial ranks, enforcing his authority mercilessly while pursuing his destiny as the architect of absolute dominion. Under Tarkin's guidance, an ultimate weapon of unparalleled destruction moves ever closer to becoming a terrifying reality. But insurgency remains a genuine threat. Guerilla attacks by an elusive band of freedom fighters must be countered with swift and brutal action -- a mission the Emperor entrusts to his most formidable agents: Darth Vader, the fearsome new Sith enforcer, and Tarkin, whose tactical cunning and cold blooded efficiency will pave the way for the Empire's supremacy... and its enemies extinction.

-----------------

A solid "good" book. I found the characterization of Tarkin, Vader, and their first tentative and later more solid relationships, to be the most intriguing part of this book. The long chase at the end for Tarkin's stolen ship was a bit tedious.... but I regularly found parts of to sink my teeth into. Through flashbacks, we learn about Tarkin's family and upbringing, and where that cold determination came from. The Emperor wanted to foster the relationship between Vader and Tarkin and by the end, the latter had the respect of the former. A solid book for anyone interested in the Star Wars universe.

A few quotes I liked:

"Darth Plagueis had once remarked that 'the Force can strike back'. The death of a star didn't necessarily curtail its light, and indeed Sidious could see evidence of that sometimes even in Vader--the barest flicker of persistent light. Attacks like the one directed against Tarkin's moon base and discoveries like the one on Murkhana were distractions to his ultimate goal of making certain the Force *could not* strike back, and that whatever faint light of hope remained could be snuffed out for good."

"Vader had swung abruptly to Tarkin on the word 'coincidence', and now the Dark Lord was in motion, pushing crates aside as he stormed about--without actually touching any of them. "
