cover blurb:
Narnia .... a land frozen in eternal winter ... a country waiting to be set free.
Four adventurers step through a wardrobe door and into the land of Narnia -- a land enslaved by the power of the White Witch. But when almost all hope is lost, the return of the Great Lion, Aslan, signals a great change ... and a great sacrifice.....
"...Someday you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again" is a snippet from the dedication of this book. Well, I don't think I've ever grown out of fairy tales & re-reading this for the first time in probably..*ahem*..45 years (eek!), I haven't out grown this either.
This was just how I remembered it....loved it! One image has stuck with me over the years & that's the passage about the animals Christmas dinner party. The witch refuses to believe that Father Christmas has provided their feast, & "at that moment one of the young squirrels lost its head completely. "He has-he has-he has!" it squeaked, beating its little spoon on the table"...."she had waved her wand & instantly where the merry party had been there were only statues of creatures (one with its stone fork fixed forever half-way to is stone mouth)..." Aw!
