The Penderwicks on Gardam Street (Penderwicks, Book 2)
2 journalers for this copy...
Bought this at a library used book sale.
I adored the first Penderwicks book, so I eagerly began reading this one. Unfortunately, on the second-to-last disc, the audio started skipping too much and I had to wait a few weeks to get another copy and finish it. It was worth it, though it feels like two separate books in my mind now.
It's an adorable story. Mr. P's wife died of cancer when the girls were still young (just after the youngest was born) and she left a missive to require Mr. P to start dating. The problem is, he doesn't want to date. And the girls don't want him to. So they launch the "Save Daddy" plan to set him up with horrible women he won't like and who won't be their new stepmom. Meanwhile, the sisters have a bit of a romance problem of their own. There's a boy in the neighborhood who loves one of them but not the one who has a crush on him, naturally, and then the boy runs off and gets a terrible girlfriend no one approves of. Meanwhile, Batty sees a scary "bug man" and ropes the new neighbor's adorable toddler and Hound into a neighborhood watch campaign. Meanwhile, Skye and Jane switch homework assignments and while Jane gets a great grade on "her" science paper, the play Skye turns in is so good her teacher decides the whole grade will perform it in front of the school... with Skye, the supposed writer, playing the lead.
With so much going on, it would be easy to have a story that's all over the place. Except it wasn't. It was just as charming as the first Penderwick book. School assignments, Halloween, dear friends, a caring aunt, sports, baking, a red wagon, new neighbors (complete with a new cat), traditions, bedtime stories, and trying to keep their mother's memory alive. Every sister got time in the spotlight. And, as a reader, I wanted them all to be successful and happy at the end, even Mr. P (despite being totally on board with the Save Daddy Plan. LOL). And though I saw the ending coming a mile away, that didn't make it any less satisfying.
It was great seeing the family at home on Gardam Street, instead of off on vacation. It was neat seeing what normal's like for this adorable, creative, loveable, dramatic family.

KateKintail gave me this at today's BCinDC meetup in Fairfax because I enjoyed the first one. Thanks!
The Penderwick sisters' father is reluctantly re-entering the dating scene, two sisters swap homework assignments with unexpectedly major consequences, and the eldest learns a bit about love. My description sounds trite but these really are charming books. I love how the family embraces each daughter's unique interests and personality. I'll have to check out the later books in the series as well.
