The Goldfinch: A Novel (Pulitzer Prize for Fiction)
2 journalers for this copy...
This is one of 24 books I selected this past weekend at The Book Thing of Baltimore. Thank you very much!
I read another copy of this book in February, 2018. This is what I wrote about it after I read it...
Wow! I'm exhausted. This book was too long for me. It was very well written with characterization and plot that helped keep up my interest throughout its many pages. In a nutshell, I learned how Theodore Decker lost his mom, took possession of a famous painting, kept it hidden for many years, and how that painting eventually affected his future.
I know that "Theo" was the person who was most important in this story because he was the one relating his experiences, but I also found his friend Boris quite nuanced and believable and his guardian Hobie a very sensitive and caring man. I was disappointed not to learn more about his friend Pippa.
I know that this novel won a Pulitzer Prize, but I personally liked The Secret History, also written by Donna Tartt, better only because The Goldfinch was less to my liking. Toward the end of The Goldfinch, I got a little lost in its philosophical meanderings and plot convolutions. I hope I got out of this novel what the author intended. She is a good writer, but I sure would like her next novel to be shorter!
