I found this softcover at a local Savers thrift shop, and was glad of another release copy. It's the first book in a series of historical fantasy set during the Hittite/Egypt conflicts, with lots of intrigue and romance along the way - and centered around a modern-day teenage girl who gets swept back in time...

The story opens with Yuri, our heroine, going about her day - and crushing on a schoolmate she likes - when weird things begin to happen; any puddle or container of water sprouts hands that try to grab her. She thinks she must be imagining things, but eventually she's grabbed out of thin air - and finds herself in an ornamental pond in what turns out to be 14th century Anatolia, kingdom of the Hittite Empire. And what's worse, she was brought there by a sorceress who wants her as a sacrifice!

She attempts an escape and runs into a handsome young man, who promptly sweeps her into a deep kiss - in part to put off the pursuing guards and in part because he's that kind of guy {grin}. He turns out to be a prince, and he comes to her rescue yet again - using methods that she's not thrilled with, but her choices are limited at this point. He does offer her some hope of returning to her own world and time, but to do so she'll have to risk getting close to the sorceress again...

The story doesn't shrink from the cruel realities of the age; a young peasant boy who helped Yuri when she first arrived was magicked by the sorceress into attacking her, and even though he wasn't responsible he's sentenced to hang. She manages to save him but it's a near thing - and given the way this volume ends, perhaps he might have regretted her kindness. This is a dangerous age indeed!

I know from later volumes which way the story's going to go, and I want to read more of the series. Lots of drama, romance, and history here.

[There's a TV Tropes page for this series under the title "Anatolia Story"; interesting info there, but beware of spoilers.]
