Safely arrived here.
ETA: I really liked the description from one of the reviews: this books requires patience. Despite the slow start and heavy topic it is enjoyable, and the almost poetic language is a treat. Author focuses a lot on sex scenes and they are way too explicit for me. 3 stars overall

I enjoyed the story, however some scenes were unnecessary to me to make sense overall. I did not find it particularly funny and the boy's life was quite intriguing, a pity this was truncated at the end.

I enjoyed this work of historical fiction. Some scenes were overly explicit and others were rather melodramatic, but I thought the novel featured good storytelling and interesting characters. I especially liked the setting and felt the author did a great job at recreating it.

The book arrived today. As Icila noted on an earlier entry, the book was on my shelf and has now been read and passed along. When I went to copy my review on the book, I found out that I forgot to journal my thoughts.
So I will write them here as I only read the book last month and still remember my impression. I liked the book in general, it was slow paced but the characterization and the setting was great. I also agreed with the other bookcrossers who found the sex scenes unnecessarily explicit. I am not offended by all explicit sex scenes, but when they appeared in this book, they did not appear to be coherent with the other parts and style of the book and I found them interfere with the narration rather than adding to it.

A little late for this June book. I'll read it as soon as possible and send it along.
This book has everything going for it--sympathetic characters you come to know intimately, beautiful language, an intriguing plot, a dramatic setting (WWII Scotland) and a satisfying ending.

I was having trouble getting into this one and staying interested, and I finally set it aside to read something else, then when I finished the something I realized I had no desire to go back to this one, so I'm gonna DNF it. I'll try to get it in the mail to earthcaroleanne Monday or Tuesday.

I've got to be honest and I'm not sure what I felt about this book. I liked the characters and the relationships (non-sexual). I didn't object to the descriptive sex but wondered about the need for some of it. Although I must say I laughed at the appearing 'chancres', especially having checked out exactly when penicillin became available for another book recently.

I'm so sorry for holding this book up for so long, I've really been struggling with a reading slump and it's taken me forever to read it but I finally have finished it and thought it was well-written. I thought the atmosphere of village life and the characters were described really well, it was a slow burn but drew me in as it went on.

Loved it! From the moment that the Dr comes to Franz's aid, and his story starts to unfold, I was hooked by this book. I have read so many other books set at this time, and yet this felt very different. I think because it is a mixture of styles - not quite a gung-ho, British spirit, Keep Calm and Carry on, but also not a depressive, war is wrong, atrocity reliving book - it is a very cleaver mixture of both which seems to me maybe how we actually cope with any crisis.
There are some funny bits, and some sad bits. It also has some shocking bits - the author has a brilliant way of writing in such a way that you get lulled into a false sense of peace, and then WHAM - something happens that shakes you up completely. A couple of times I had to go back a couple of pages to make sure that I'd read correctly and hadn't missed out something. A brilliant skill.
While the ending stops short of being the huge, lovely and probably unrealistic ending that both Franz and Lachlan dream of, it is an ending that feels good.
I would love to follow these people's story further ... how does the events effect them and their village? Does war intrude even further? Does Franz find his family? But I'm happy to have shared their story so far.

What an interesting cast of characters, each one an archetype, or its shadow counterpart. I really would like to know more, to go deeper into their lives and into what comes next for them, especially for Franz/Frank, Gail and the wonderful Lachman. I'll have to call for imagination to get that.
I emailed Fifna previously and she said she doesn't need the book back so, I'll leave it available for others to read.
Thank you so much for sharing.

Sent on Wednesday, the 2nd of June, for the First sentence virtual book box. Sorry for the delay. I haven't been home for a while and my wife couldn't find it on my shelves. All is well now.
The sentence is "During a freezing November sunset in 1941 Dr Lachlan McCready stands near the cliff edge contemplating his final house call of the day"
Enjoy!
