The Ninth Hour opens with the suicide of a young railway employee fired from his job. It then follows the life of his pregnant wife, Annie and this being Irish Catholic Brooklyn in the early 20th century the nuns who quickly step in to help her. Sally, the daughter born soon after, is at the center of the novel. What makes all of Alice McDermott's novel so moving is at play here again, with very ordinary people facing very difficult moral decisions or living exquisite joys.
