The author turns Victorian London into a grimy steampunk scenery with apocalyptic fumes and fogs, the streets swarmed by strange mutants like broomcats and swearing messenger-parakeets. The leading characters, well, quite all of the cast, are historical figures, and it if you don't want to miss a joke, you'd better be familiar with them. Even Spring Heeled-Jack is a historic fact. He has been sighted at several occasions from 1838 - 1904, police reports exist. Fortunately, there is an appendix with a short description of every character.
Hodder creates an alternate history and lets the assasination attempt on queen Victoria at 10 June 1840 be successful. The assassin Edward Oxford is instantly restrained and accidentally killed. Spring Heeled Jack flees and disappears. Richard Francis Burton, the famous explorer, is appointed royal detective and must unveil the mystery behind this frightening apparition of an electrified, hopping bogeyman. He is assisted by his young friend, the poet Algernon Swinburne who is an enthusiast of bizarre sex techiques.
The author mixes genetics, early technology and sci-fi time travel into a thrilling adventure which is quite brutal and gory at times. It's the first of a series with Burton & Swinburne and a must for every steampunk fan I guess.
