I haven't read any Monica Ali before. Not sure I will again. It's not that she isn't skilled - she is, in spades - but there was something terribly icy about this somehow. The sort of writing that you admire rather than enjoy. It didn't help that I thought the main character was a dick, when I suspect I was meant to sympathise with him. However, stick with it for the last hundred or so pages, as it includes a description of a mental breakdown/psychotic episode which is really astonishing.

Currently about halfway through..
The main character is an ass, but has a fairly major mental breakdown as a reward. Less sympathetic than her novel Brick Lane , still well written but it doesn't quite come together for me.
Well written but I couldn't finish it. I couldn't keep watching the main character destroy himself - unlikeable as he is.
