This is not an ordinary book: it's a BookCrossing book! BookCrossing books are world travelers - they like to have adventures and make new friends...and every once in a while they even write home to say what they've been doing.

Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood, but I couldn't get into this. Hopefully someone else will have better luck.

A dip into a world

paint with a brush,
that holds past and present

like ringlets of gold.

I loved the title on this book and the cover. This book had good reviews, so I was definitely interested in reading it.

It did take me a long time to get through though. Not because it was poorly written but mostly because it was very dense. So much history and happenings packed in, it's almost surreal.

It sounds like Paraguay was a truly brutal place. I liked how he used eloquent prose in his writing style. Sometimes it was a bit confusing with the way he would back track here and there but the history had so much affect on the countries future events as they happened that it was a hot mess.

And, often, in explaining one situation you had to first go back again to the past people in power or events to show how they directly effected what was going on at the moment. I mean, really, so many countries meddling. Such a wild and semi-uninhabitable place of extremes. The people themselves were incredibly resilient.

It's actually quite amazing. And the brutally wasn't hidden but he put it in a slanted light so you didn't have to gag with the reality of it. You could chose to focus more on other details of the things going on.

Really, he did an excellent job. I'm fully impressed!

I'll be keeping this, at least for the time being, till I find a replacement copy and then I'll release this for traveling again. :)
