I got this paperback from a friend who's decluttering, and I was glad of another release copy.

I dimly recall seeing the 1951 film version of this book on TV when I was a kid, but I hadn't read the book until a few years ago, when I listened to an unabridged-audio version of the novel via Audible.com (see it here). I enjoyed it very, very much - in fact, I found it surprisingly detailed (and often prescient) in its descriptions of the effects of a near-miss by a huge celestial body on the Earth, and the scientific explanations throughout were quite good for the time.

The story is sometimes a bit dated, but not nearly as much so as I'd expected, and there's plenty of action in addition to some pretty cool science. [Well, and the occasional Very Fortunate Miracle, but what can you do!] I liked the characters (with some reservations about one, who tended to be tiresome and possessive about his love-interest - perhaps not something to blame him for but under the circumstances everybody else was coping much better!), and the story not only held my interest but got me rather teary here and there...

[There's an interesting TV Tropes page about this book and its sequel, After Worlds Collide (but beware of spoilers), and another page about the film adaptation. And I've heard that there's a new film adaptation of the book in the works, though details are scanty.]
