I got this slightly-battered vintage paperback from a friend who's decluttering. It's the third volume of The Lord of the Rings, and opens at a point where each of the separated members of the fellowship have crises to face... This volume has a story-so-far summary up front.
The book inspired the 2003 film, a very good adaptation (though I do have a few little quibbles).
