Fascinating nonfiction read about Blackwell's Island (across the river from Manhattan), the 19th century home of NYC's almshouse, workhouse, charity hospitals, penitentiary, and lunatic asylum. Author does a thoughtful job of showing how we have (or haven't) progressed. Particularly interesting approach to the subject by following a Catholic priest assigned to minister to the island's residents.
