I'm claiming this from the Otherworldly bookbox. It's from McDevitt's "Priscilla Hutchins" series, with ace pilot Hutch an ongoing character - though this book's late enough in the sequence that it seems she's being called out of retirement!

Later: Very good space-faring tale, set in a moderately-hopeful 2255 - when a newly-developed star drive allows access to the core of the galaxy, the Cauldron - and, just possibly, the source of the devastating omega clouds. Lots of intriguing characters, an alien presence with its own motivations, and a very thrilling climax - close calls, last-minute improvisations, heroism, and more. Hutch seems to have some traits in common with MacGyver {wry grin}.

[There's a TV Tropes page on the series, with some entertaining tidbits.]
