The Good Earth

I like the honest, plain way the author tells the story. It feels very Chinese, I mean like a translated work rather than a foreigner-written Oriental story. My favorite character is O-Lan, and I wish that she had a happier life, although in some way, one can say it is a lot better than what it might be otherwise.
Interesting, the night I finished the book, my father happened to mention over dinner that his family used to own hundreds of acres of land back in China. Unfortunately, they had to burn all the titles and leases during the Cultural Revolution. It makes me wonder if my ancestors toiled the land and gained them acre by acre like Wang Lung did. It also makes me wonder, if the book were written a decade later, what kind of ending would it have. I definitely won't want him to have to live that hell of a time being labeled as an evil landowner.
