Journal Entry 1 by wingerishkigalwing from Salt Lake City, Utah USA on Saturday, April 7, 2018
this is my original journal:
can't quite decide whether to put this in "outdoors and nature' or "biographies and memoirs, " so I've chosen "other".

What an incredible book! Beautiful, evocative, inspiring, eye-opening...tremendously sad, phenomenally hopeful. Anger-provoking, wish-evoking....

Can you tell I loved this book??! I still don't know how/where to classify it, or how to describe it. "Refuge" is a classification unto itself. Set in the 1980s, Williams, a naturalist, deftly tells of this period when the Great Salt Lake flooded, destroying much habitat, including the bird refuge. As she shows us the land, the lake, and their inhabitants, she also shows us her family and herself, the progression of her mother's cancer, the gradual inundation of them all, and their transmutations and transformations.

Washington Post Book World said:

"...both a natural history of an ecological phenomenon, along with a Mormon family saga...a heroic book."

and the Kansas City Star called it "Profoundly moving...brilliantly conceived...one of the most significant environmental essays of our time."

We don't even have an essay category~~~
