In the chill grey of an Aberdeen February violence is just around the corner...
A serial rapist is leaving a string of tortured women behind him, but while DS Logan McRae's girlfriend PC Jackie 'Ball Breaker' Watson, is out acting as bait, he's trying to identify a blood drenched body dumped outside A&E. Logan's investigations suggest someone in the local bondage community has developed a taste for violent death and he soon finds himself dragged into the twilight world of pornographers, sex-shop and S&M. Meanwhile, the prime suspect in the rape case turns out to be Aberdeen Football Club's star striker and he has an alibi for every attack. Logan thinks they've got it horribly wrong, but can he get anyone to listen before the real rapist strikes again? Especially as Jackie is convinced the footballer's guilty and she's hell-bent on a conviction at any cost...
I really enjoyed this third book in the Logan Macrae series. He is dark, he has issues, but he's a real human being, and he's not either addicted to swearing or womanising. I liked him. He's a bit insecure. He's clever, but he makes mistakes. He gets jealous - really jealous. But he's endearing, because though he does judge, he tries hard not to. Stuart Macbride does pick some horrible subjects but fortunately there weren't too many graphic details and it was told with a focus on the emotional impact - on the parents of the missing children, the community, and the police. There was actually quite a lot happening in this book and I almost forgot about who killed Jason.

Difficult subject well observed. I particularly enjoy the confusing relationships between the ranks. Definitely looking forward to the next. Having been devoured overnight by Mr Cross-patch it is about to be released in Palermo.
