From the back cover:
Meet Maud.
Maud is forgetful. She makes a cup of tea and doesn't remember to drink it. She goes to the shops and forgets why she went. Sometimes her home is unrecognizable - or her daughter Helen seems a total stranger.
But there's one thing Maud is sure of: her friend Elizabeth is missing. The note in her pocket tells her so. And no matter who tells her to stop going on about it, to leave it alone, to shut up, Maud will get to the bottom of it.
Because somewhere in Maud's damaged mind lies the answer to an unsolved seventy-year-old mystery. One everyone has forgotten about.
Everyone, except Maud . . .

I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy this book as the subject matter of dementia is something that can be really hard to face but I thought this book handled it really well.
So often we believe that even if it looks bleak, everything is going to work out well in the end for our hero or heroine, but with a book like this you know there's not going to be some kind of miracle cure, that the book will have a sad ending but there is still character development and resolution in other aspects of the story.
I thought the way the author didn't feel the need to make her characters totally likeable worked really well, and you end up feeling for them even in spite of their flaws and frustrations.
A really engaging and thought-provoking read.

Wow! A really interesting concept. I started reading this book and initially I thought I was going to be very sad about it. My late great-grandmother had dementia and it proved to be very difficult for my family. However I very much enjoyed this book. I felt that Headley was able to grasp the concept of what it's like to live with someone with dementia. I felt sad for Maud with her confusion, her inability to remember basic things although I liked the way she was able to go back to her past a lot and could remember things very well. I genuinely wanted to know what happened to both Sukey and Elizabeth also.
Initially this book was taking a lot longer for me to read than usual, but today I devoured the last third.

Rec'd when my "Debut Novels" Book box came home.
