I got this softcover at a local Savers thrift shop. It's the first volume in a manga series based on the hit anime. It's set in an alternate-history modern-day world where "Britannia" has conquered Japan and dubbed it "Area 11". There are rebels - who are put down brutally by the reigning classes - and there are young people from both sides who hope to find a way to peace, even if it has to be done through violent means... The main characters are Lelouch, of Britannia - though he wants to overthrow them - and Suzaku, a Japanese who tries to make his fellow Area-11ers stick to peaceful methods of protest. The two boys are friends, despite their differences, but that's about to be put to a test...

Lelouch stumbles across a mysterious girl in a crashed craft; she offers him power if he's willing to take it. He's caught by Britannic forces - with Suzaku a new member of the team - and Suzaku is ordered to kill him; he refuses and is shot by his commanding officer, sending Lelouch into a rage. He uses his new power of geass to cause the enemy forces to kill themselves! Yep, it's that simple, and that devastating. And with that, his course has changed.

This volume focuses on this "start of darkness," as he learns the powers and the limitations of his ability - for one thing, it seems to only work once per person, so if he uses it for a nonlethal geass he won't be able to do anything further with that person in future. (He also can't undo it, but the ramifications of that won't become horribly obvious for a while yet.)

Lelouch's first major act in attempting to break the hold of Britannia is a brutal and devastating one - but perhaps more personally devastating is his realization that, while his friend Suzaku has survived the shooting, Lelouch's new powers - and their ideological differences - mean he can't be honest with his closest friend ever again...

[There's a TV Tropes page on the anime and the many spinoffs, with some entertaining tidbits.]
