Blurb: India is a fascinating and complex country, a land that is breathtaking in its cultural and spiritual richness and heartbreaking in its economic challenges. In this vivid and perceptive book, Pramila Jayapal, an Indian-born, Western-educated woman, takes the reader with her on a journey of discovery as she returns to India and explores the complex issues of progress and development, and ultimately, of her own search for self and identity.
After receiving a grant from the Institute for Current World Affairs, Jayapal spends 2 years immersing herself in the life of her native land, living in smaller cities and villages. Traveling from Kerala to Ladakh to the holy city of Varanasi on the Ganges river, she witnesses firsthand a society struggling to reconcile tradition with modernity and eventually confronts what both delights and frustrates her in her country of origin. In doing so, she begins to understand the profound lessons that Indian culture and society have to offer, lessons with the power to enlighten and enrich our way of living in today´s rapidly changing world.
Weaving together her extraordinary personal journey with incisive, bold commentary on contemporary issues, Jayapal has written a thought-provoking and illuminating book of great power and grace.

I read the first chapter of this a long time ago but got stuck on the second for quite a while, as the religious aspect just couldn't hold my attention. As I recall the first chapter was mainly about women's rights and social issues, which I found really interesting, and similar topics appeared on the third chapter now that I finally got all the way there. Also very touching to read what happened with the birth of their son and how it was dealt with.
