This is the story of 2 women, Eve and Charlie. It is told in two different time periods - 1915 during WWI and 1947 just after the end of WWII. The story is captivating and I found it amazing to learn of the risks taken by the female spies of the Alice Network during WWI, of which Eve was a part. Charlie is searching for her cousin who has not been heard from since 1944 and the two women team up on a quest to learn the truth. The book held my interest right to the last page and I would highly recommend it.

Finished reading this book today, and it is the first book by author Kate Quinn that I have read. I realized as I read this historical fiction account of female spies working in German-occupied France during WW I that I knew very little about the espionage experiences and courage of these brave women. The writing is strong and certainly there were parts of the book that were very difficult to read due to the images created by the author's words. But the reader is drawn into the tale from the beginning, alternating chapter by chapter between 1915 and 1947. I had not heard of Louise de Bettignies, the leader of the Alice Network, prior to reading this book and have now been able to do some research on this brave woman to better understand her courageous actions during WW I.
