Oh this is a good book! I finished this last nihgt and really enjoyed it. Despite it being rather biblical in subject it was written so well. I loved the first part more than the second as I was fascinated by the Red Tent and how women were allowed three days and three nights off from life so to speak...why can't we do that now? Anyway, a book definately worth reading...will offer this as a bookring on BCUK!

The book arrived safely this morning, thanks.
I've always been fascinated by the story of Dinah - everyone knows about her brothers but poor Dinah is always left out.
I look forward to reading this book :-)

Journal Entry 5 by loopy1 from Herne Bay, Kent United Kingdom on Thursday, May 20, 2004
I knew within the first couple of pages that I was going to enjoy this book. I knew the story as told in the bible already, but it was fascinating to read this slant on the familiar tale.
The characters came over as really believable, and I was fascinated to read of their life.
Thanks for sharing this, I really enjoyed it.

Sorry it's taken me a few days longer than normal to journal this, a house-move got in the way. I have two other ray books to read before this one but I should be making a start on it within the next two weeks.

Journal Entry 7 by Yiremyahu on Monday, June 14, 2004
Arrived safely. Thanks!

Journal Entry 8 by Yiremyahu on Monday, June 21, 2004
Thanks for this. I enjoyed reading it; it was interesting reading the story from a different point of view.

I wonder how much of this was original and how much was based on other sources: is this the only story where Dinah ends up in Egypt?

Will be on its way to Jords.

Journal Entry 9 by Jords from Preston, Lancashire United Kingdom on Monday, June 28, 2004
Looks a good read. Will journal when read - cheers xx

Journal Entry 10 by Jords from Preston, Lancashire United Kingdom on Saturday, August 28, 2004
What a lovely book!

I like others preferred the earlier part of the book. The red tent was lovey especially during the moon LOL. Mmmm wish we could have 3 days off with wine galore - not so sure about the straw though or the rites for the journey into womanhood LOL!

All in all a lovely read, even if some little bits are a bit long winded.

I'd recommend this for a snug winter read with a glass of wine and a lovely warm fire!

Thanks for letting me read it.

Arrived safely this morning - but it's the third bookring here at the moment :o( I will pass it on as soon as possible and thanks for sharing :o)

Journal Entry 12 by KathyS from Ramsey, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, October 13, 2004
I come from a non-religious family and my only knowledge of the story of Jacob and Joseph comes from the Jason Donovan stage version of "Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat"!!

I loved the book, especially the day to day details of life in ancient times. But I had to keep reminding myself that this isn't an autobiography and couldn't help wondering on what research the book was based. I know that many of the biblical stories were tales passed down by storytelling from generation to generation but it is the small details that I questioned. How much is really known about the routines and rituals of those times? Obviously some are still practised today, eg. circumcision, but others seem a little far fetched.

Agreeing with Olliebear, I too would love the opportunity to withdraw from the household at "the time of the month" and spend some quality time with a bottle of wine and a big bar of chocolate. It would certainly mean that the men of the household would be spared my foul moods and sharp tongue!

Thanks for sharing this with me. Again, another book that I probably wouldn't have read but for BookCrossing :o)

RELEASE NOTES:

Sent 2nd class mail to Ziggythecat - hope it arrives safely.

Tempted to start this now as I'm struggling to get into my current book. Thanks KathyS, love the smart, personalised bookmark/greetings thingy :o)

Really enjoyed this book. It was fascinating to read about the separate lives of the men & women, not just their work & daily habits but also how your sex determined to a large extent the beliefs & gods you were brought up with & the traditions you kept. I had to go away & look the bible version up, which took some time as its been a while . Genesis Chapter 34 tells of the 'defilement' of Dinah but also of how her husbands soul 'clave to her'. The descriptions of the midwives work was interesting too, despite the serious risk of death for the mother & baby, the sense of family and support must have been wonderful especially when you think of todays sterile hospital rooms & consultants hovering. What are those bricks that they kept talking about though? I kept getting this image of some poor woman in the final stages of labour trying to balance on two house-bricks & I know that can't be right, lol. Anyone know??

Off to Anfield today (24 Nov)

I was just perusing my bookshelf intending to update my entry for this and find it is not there. Obviously my sorry brain is in decline as I was certain I journalled it when I recevied it but it appears not. Sorry.
Anyway ... I'm not finished yet, and keep getting hijacked by more appealing books. I'm on page 125 and it is still not grabbing me, but the positive journal entries are encouraging me to try again so I will give it one more shot! Women menstruating on straw just isn't my thing, I guess, but I'm sure there is more to this book than I have found so far.

Journal Entry 17 by Anfield from Bagshot, Surrey United Kingdom on Sunday, January 16, 2005
Well I am pleased to report that there is indeed a lot more to this book than the events prior to p.125! It was very moving, inspiring and also brutal. A great story, even if I did find the names a bit of a drag. Off to gooner asap.

Journal Entry 18 by Anfield from Bagshot, Surrey United Kingdom on Monday, January 17, 2005
Gooner has her own copy now so has asked to be skipped. Posting to Skribble today.

Arrived safely thanks Anfield - I loved the little notelet you put in with it.
Have a couple of books ahead of this but will read asap.

I loved this book! From the first paragraph I felt 'hooked' by it and really relished the time I spent reading it. I felt thoroughly sucked up and plonked into an ancient world and could almost hear and smell what was going on around Dinah.

I have to say, I don't care how well researched it was or how true the facts and details were. I found them believeable at the time of reading and that's enough for me!

Journal Entry 21 by kangaroo from Barnet, Greater London United Kingdom on Wednesday, February 9, 2005
Just dropped through the letter box. Thanks Skribble!
Predictably, I think there are a few more books in the queue before this one, but will get to it ASAP.

What a great book!

It's interesting seeing how different people liked different parts of it, though. I enjoyed the first section, giving all the background of Jacob's sons and family, but I was impatient for the love story and Dinah's part to kick in. Once it had, that was it, I was away, I had to finish it that night!

Thank you very much for sharing - will go on to the next person once I have their address.

As Beebarf has obtained multiple copies of this via other means, I am sending this on to Wistful tomorrow. :)

Journal Entry 24 by WistfulDragon from Streatham, Greater London United Kingdom on Friday, March 18, 2005
Arrived today - one of three parcels, isn't that always the way?! This was the second one opened though, so it shouldn't take me too long to get to it.

Journal Entry 25 by WistfulDragon from Streatham, Greater London United Kingdom on Monday, March 28, 2005
What a great read! I started it while logging on to my computer yesterday afternoon - which always takes a while. Then when waiting for things to load, I kept turning back to it. I finally gave up all pretence of interest in the computer and devoured the rest of the book - so I had to have a lie in this morning!
I'll send on to Winterson as soon as I get an address.

Journal Entry 26 by Winterson from Peacehaven , East Sussex United Kingdom on Saturday, April 9, 2005
Yay!! Passed to me by Wistfuldragon at the London meet today. Looking forward to this one!

Well, real life has really got in the way over the last month so I'm having to be sensible and pass on some of the rings that have accumulated here. Unfortunately, this is already overdue, so is moving on. Olliebear- sorry to hold it all up, I'd still like to read this but am in major backlog. Maybe I could borrow it again when I'm a bit less buried?

Sorry, and thanks...

This has come back to me via ellamegalast who was unable to journal it. What a lovely journey it has had!
