I got this softcover at a local Goodwill thrift shop. It's a loosely-linked collection of tales about "Grandma Dowdel", a tart, manipulative, colorful character as described by young Joey and Mary Alice, as they visit her each summer through the Depression years. The anecdotes range from a rather grisly one involving a wake over the corpse of a local loner (with a classic cat-scare and a not-so-classic Grandma-wielding-shotgun scare - not to worry, the cat's fine) to a squicky prank involving putting a dead mouse in a milk bottle... Yeah. That was Grandma too, though she had her reasons. See what happens when people had to make their own entertainment in the pre-internet days? {wry grin}

[There's a TV Tropes page on the book, with some entertaining tidbits.]
