This is one of those books that seems to have a large cast of characters at the beginning but as I kept reading, the number of characters seemed to shrink as I got to know them better. In other words, don't be daunted if it seems like a lot of names are thrown at you in the first ten pages or so.

Mia and her daughter Pearl have just moved to Shaker Heights, Ohio, a place where everything is planned and seemingly perfect. They are renting a duplex from Elena Richardson whose four children attend school with Pearl. The oldest is Lexie, a senior who has been dating her boyfriend Bryan for two years. Next is Trip, the athlete of the family. After him is Moody, the quieter brother who befriends Pearl. The youngest is Izzie, the black sheep of the family. Gradually all of their lives get tangled up culminating in the Richardsons' six bedroom home burning to the ground (this is the first sentence in the book so not a huge spoiler).

Mia is an artist who packs up and moves whenever she finishes one art project and is ready to start a new one. Pearl has never known any other nomadic life. When they arrive in Shaker Heights, Mia promises Pearl that this is their final stop and they are here to stay. Pearl has never met any of her other relatives. Whenever they move to a new town, Mia finds a part time job that will just barely pay for their rent and food.

After Moody befriends Pearl and she begins spending time at the Richardson house after school, Elena offers Mia a job as their part time housekeeper. Mia is not interested in taking the job (she already has a part time job at a Chinese restaurant in town) but feels that she can't say no to her landlord. Elena likes to think of herself as a generous person who is giving opportunities to those less fortunate so she is oblivious to the fact that Mia clearly does not want to work for her.

While Pearl is hanging out with Moody, Lexie, and Trip at the Richardson house after school, black sheep Izzie begins spending time with Mia in the afternoons, helping her with whatever art she is working on.

Eventually, people start learning each other's secrets.
