This book is laugh out loud hilarious! But don't read it if you don't want to get some really bad songs stuck in your head (Billy Don't Be A Hero, Feelings, Disco Duck, etc.)

And thanks to the Songs People Get Wrong chapter, now I can't think of the song "Help Me Rhonda" without hearing these lyrics for the opening lines:

Well since she put me down
There's been owls pukin' in my bed

and has anyone heard this song "Timothy" he talks about? I don't think I've ever heard it, but it sounds very strange!

This book is going in a bookring, and when I get it back, I plan to release it in a CD store behind a Mac Davis CD (or some other singer mentioned in the book.)

I put some fun things inside, so if you see something you like, feel free to take it. Thanks for participating!

OMG this book is the funniest!!!!! I got it in the mail and read the entire thing aloud to MrShadie while he was in his workshop. I finished it before I even got inside to register it!!!!!
Sending it off to RBB right away!!!!!!

Journal Entry 5 by rainbowbabe from West Chester, Pennsylvania USA on Tuesday, May 11, 2004
Thank you, Shadie!

I love Dave Barry! And I loved his columns about bad songs, in spite of the fact that reading such things unleashes the many bad songs lurking in my own brain. (Dave DOES provide a warning at the front of the book.)

This book is the perfect antidote to too much paper grading!!

p.s., Yes, I DO know the song "Timothy"! I haven't read what Barry says in the book yet, but I assure you that it is a very bizarre, unsettling, eery song, one that actually made me very nervous when I was a kid. And now your mere mention of the name has set the song free...

Timothy
Timothy
Where on earth did you go?
Timothy
Timothy
GOD why don't I know....

Ack!

I got this book a few minutes ago out of the mailbox. I opened it, read the DEDICATION and now have that damnable "Who put the bomp in the bomp ba-bomp ba-bomp" song stuck in my head!!!!

I'm gonna love this book. I can see it already! LOL

It shouldn't take long to read.

Just got this in the mail today. It looks like fun.

Journal Entry 10 by carolmomof3 on Friday, November 19, 2004
Warning: Do not read this book while your partner is trying to sleep next to you. When they say laugh out loud, they mean it. You might strain something vital trying to be quiet and avoid shaking the bed, while tears of laughter stream down your face. You might have a sore neck and scratchy throat the next day. You might be tempted to read it again while partner is awake in order to share the best parts.

You might think twice before reading this, if you don't want "dead teenager" songs stuck in your head:

Oh where, oh where can my BABY be?
The Lord took her aWAY from me...

Will send this out to meshe ASAP.

Two bad things happened to me this week. The first, I saw this article yesterday that told me Dave had stopped writing his weekly column. The second was much worse. I woke up this morning with the chorus from the song "Live Like You Were Dying" (Tim McGraw) in my head.

"How is this possible?" you may ask. I asked the same thing. And I got to the bottom of it. I listen to a "mix" radio station in the car. You know, the kind that plays generic, current, pop hits from this decade and the last, usually has a night or weekend format that plays "retro" stuff, etc. And I know *how* I know this song (or at least the chorus): since this radio station started playing the Nelly and Tim McGraw song
Over and Over, they evidently now have a Tim McGraw album in their possession. Why waste it? Let's see what other Tim McGraw songs we can play? (at least, that's what I imagine happening around the conference table at KIMN Mix100).

Anyway, the first time I heard it, I almost had an accident, trying to figure out *why* I didn't have the phone number to the radio station programmed into my phone! You know, I have nothing against Tim McGraw, in fact, I kind of like him. But I DON'T want to hear country music on my radio station! AUUUGH! Anyway, I've now heard it a total of 4 times (possibly not even the whole song all the way through), and . . .well, now the dang chorus is stuck in my head! "ah went skah-dah-vin, ah went rrrockeh mountain clahmin. . "

OY!

Anyway, I'm close to being done with the book, which I'll comment on in my next entry. I leave you all with the lyrics (to what is a well-intentioned song and has a great premise, but as with most country songs, becomes silly in its execution) so you can be as annoyed as I am:

He said I was in my early forties
with a lot of life before me
when a moment came that stopped me on a dime
and I spent most of the next days
looking at the x-rays
Talking bout the options
and talking bout sweet time
I asked him when it sank in
that this might really be the real end
how's it hit you when you get that kinda news
man what'd you do

and he said
I went sky diving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named FuManchu
and I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
and I gave forgiveness I'd been denying
and he said someday I hope you get the chance
to live like you were dying.

He said I was finally the husband
that most the time I wasn't
and I became a friend a friend would like to have
and all the sudden going fishin
wasn't such an imposition
and I went three times that year I lost my dad
well I finally read the good book
and I took a good long hard look
at what I'd do if I could do it all again

and then
I went sky diving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named FuManchu
and I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
and I gave forgiveness I'd been denying
and he said someday I hope you get the chance
to live like you were dying.

Like tomorrow was a gift and you got eternity to think about
what'd you do with it what did you do with it
what did I do with it
what would I do with it?

Sky diving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named FuManchu
and then I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
and I watched an eagle as it was flying
and he said someday I hope you get the chance
to live like you were dying.
To live like you were dying
To live like you were dying
To live like you were dying
To live like you were dying

So I found another inappropiate time to read this book, carolmomof3! During the nightly news. You may find yourself laughing at very inopportune times. . .

I laughed out loud so many times during this book, it would be easier to list the times I *didn't* laugh :) I wanted to bookmark and then comment on something on almost every page. I finally narrowed it down to a selection on a song I know well, "A Horse With No Name". Dave writes, "I myself have always found 'A Horse With No Name' to be highly irritating. I agree with the comic Rich Jeni, who says: "You're in a desert. You got nothin' else to do. NAME THE FREAKIN' HORSE.'"

Another one that is permanently stuck in my mind is "Seasons in the Sun", ". . . a song about a person who is dying, but not fast enough."

Oh dear, this was one funny book! Thank you so much for sharing it with us, ILuvToRead2! I already have Pyan's addy, so this will be going out on Tuesday (P.O. is closed tomorrow).

OMG ... received in the mail today & I made the mistake of opening it. Then my hubby came home so I had to start reading it to him while we both laughed ourselves silly.

We've stopped at page 46; it's hard to pull away, but if we don't go to the store before the storm hits, we won't be able to eat & we need sustenance so we can go back to the book!

Update: 1/24/05 -- this book is hilarous; I can't believe how much I've laughed. Great therapy :)

Thank you so much for starting this ring!

Journal Entry 18 by billsmith from Mesa, Arizona USA on Friday, February 04, 2005
Just picked it up in this morning's mail and it looks like a blast! Dave Barry is one of the few humor writers who can have me literally laughing until I cry, so I'm looking forward to this.

Wow - when I signed up for this ring, I was the last person on it. Since then, six or seven more have signed up. It'll be on its way to Flakes in Illinois when I'm done with it.

Journal Entry 19 by billsmith from Mesa, Arizona USA on Friday, February 04, 2005
Funny as heck, and a very quick read. Polished it off in a long lunch hour at work on a stressful day when the laughs were more than welcome!

On it's way to the next lucky recipient as soon as I have the address...

Journal Entry 20 by billsmith from Mesa, Arizona USA on Saturday, February 05, 2005
Just dropped this off at the Post Office, so it's on its way to Flakes. Hope she enjoys it as much as I did!

The only thing that kept me from rating this a full 10 out of 10 was that he called 'American Pie' a bad song, at least twice. Sorry, Dave, but as you point out a few times yourself in the book, taste is a subjective thing. And in this case, yours is wrong.

Journal Entry 21 by Flakes from Bloomington, Illinois USA on Wednesday, February 09, 2005

Now if I could just stop singing The Name Game....

Got the book yesterday and started reading immediately. Very fun book. I read it aloud to my boyfriend who knew more of the songs in the book then I did, though I did know a fair amount. But my boyfriend kept saying, "gosh i like that song" and I'd start laughing. Quick fun reading.

PMing Bellemorte now for address and will send it on its way. Thanks for sharing this book with me.

Just received this today - can't wait to read it!

Journal Entry 31 by silverstarry from Berkeley, California USA on Sunday, April 17, 2005
I love Dave Barry's columns, so I was really looking forward to reading this book. I wasn't disappointed - the Book of Bad Songs is hilarious! I completely agree with him - you can like a song and still recognize its badness. One of my votes for Fun Song That Gets Stuck in My Head But Sucks Lyrically is Butterfly by Crazytown (although it hasn't hit the requisite five year mark specified by Dave) which features lyrics such as:

Come my lady
Come, come my lady
You’re my butterfly
Sugar, baby
Come my lady
You're my pretty baby
I'll make your legs shake
You'll make me go crazy

Thanks to Dave, I will never look at Gary Puckett or singers named Bobby the same way again.

Thanks to ILuvToRead2 for sharing this fun book!

Thanks for sharing this, ILuvToRead2, it's gonna be fun!

Journal Entry 34 by Maurean from Atlantic Beach, Florida USA on Thursday, April 28, 2005
Oh My GOSH!! This book was hilarious! Really. I literally laughed until I cried. Had I read the previous journal entries prior to the book, I would have heeded Carol's warning and saved myself from having to actually leave the comfort of my bed as to not wake the other-half with my persistent giggling! (when Barry talks about "Girl Watchers" ;

Hello there female
my, my but do you look swell

Gosh! Thank You, Male! Let's have sex relations!"

yeah; that's where I lost it.)

I read this through in one evening and laughed out loud; I read passages to my other-half and together we laughed. Then, I called my mother the next day to read passages over the phone and together, we laughed hysterically!

Thank you so very much, ILTR2, for sharing this wonderful therapy! Oh, and, a big thanks to Shadie & Antof9 for the link that allowed me to diagnose my Tunettes syndrome - its nice to know one doesn't suffer alone! ;)

(I've already got petaloka's addy, so I will mail this along on my next PO run..)

I'm a big fan of Dave Barry and when ever I read his stuff I expect to laugh out loud (and usaully do!). I don't know what it was with this book. It had its funny moments but it wasn't his funniest book by far.

Journal Entry 38 by Lpree from Omaha, Nebraska USA on Tuesday, May 17, 2005
This arrived in yesterday's mail. I have a couple other bookrings ahead of it, but will read it as soon as I can. I LOVE Dave Barry, so I'm anxious to read this!

Journal Entry 39 by Lpree from Omaha, Nebraska USA on Sunday, May 29, 2005
Okay, I have to apologize - I finished this a couple of days ago and haven't managed to get back on the computer to journal it. I love Dave Barry, so I did enjoy reading this, though I thought it wasn't as good as some of his other books. But I think it would have helped to know more of the songs he was referring to. Still, there were certainly laugh out loud lines.

Thanks very much to ILuv2Read2 for starting this ring! I will PM Flicki and hope to mail it out this week.

Journal Entry 40 by Flicki from Aurich, Niedersachsen Germany on Monday, August 01, 2005
Received this book today and am already half through it! Fortunately, my boyfriend has gone to take a nap now and so stopped running after me, singing 'Yummy! Yummy! Yummy!' I already feel like Timothy! ;-)

So, now it's just me and the book. Hopefully, there will be a section somehow of my very, very favourite worst texts group, 'Sandalwood'. Does anybody else in the world now them? I saw that record for about 20 cents 10 years ago in a very trashy shop and it looked so curious, I really HAD to buy it. It's just great!

"She loves cauliflowers and conifers
Kids who call her Mom
Cryin' at the movies
Lyin' next to me at dawn
She's the music in my music
The love song in my life
She's a very fine lady
She's my wife!

Shalalaalalalala..."

Okay, I'm not entirely sure about the cauliflowers. That could be 'holy gods' as well. Or something in between. The quality is not THAT great. ;-)

Some of Carole King's songs are also real evergreens for the Songs that Women Hate section. I mean, seriously...

"Chains, my baby's got me locked up in chains
And they ain't the kind that you can see
Whoa, it's chains of love got a hold on me, yeah

Chains, well, I can't break away from these chains
Can't run around
'Cause I'm not free
Whoa, these chains of love won't let me be, yeah

Now believe me when I tell you
I think you're fine
I'd like to hold you
But I can't break away from all of these chains"

Or, maybe even worse

"One fine day, you'll look at me
And you will know our love was meant to be
One fine day, you're gonna want me for your girl

The arms I long for, will open wide
And you'll be proud to have me right by your side
One fine day, you're gonna want me for your girl

Though I know you're the kind of boy
Who only wants to run around
I'll keep waiting, and, someday darling
You'll come to me when you want to settle down,
Oh!

One fine day, we'll meet once more
And then you'll want the love you threw away before
One fine day, you're gonna want me for your girl"

I mean, my world was fine until I learned English!

I'd rather get back to reading the book! :-)

ILTR2, could you please send me your address? You will get this posting, so I don't have to write this twice! :-) Thank you so much for sharing!

Journal Entry 41 by Flicki from Aurich, Niedersachsen Germany on Monday, August 01, 2005
After trying to send the posting all day (while my internet didn't work...), it looks now as if I've finished the 2nd half within a few minutes. This is not entirely true. :-)

Still waiting for ILuvToRead2s address. Then you'll go back home, little book!

PS: The song on page 82 should be 'Dankeschön', for sure. That's German for 'thank you'! I won't invite Dave Barry for dinner now, knowing his language abilities!
