I liked the setting , the characters, the events. There is always something weird, funny, sad, eccentric... going on.
I didn't like that there are new characters springing out from nowhere all the time, even towards the end.
In the end, this novel exhausted. It is very well-written though.
Bob, Gene and Nancy have a lot going on. During more than forty years, the streetwise Bob and university students become friends. It's something that will keep them going throughout the years, although they lose contact when Gene and Nancy give in to family pressure and they conform to somebody else's designs for their lives.
The trip begins at half of the book. I would have summarized all the background stories.
