The Big Box O' Books arrived safely today - many thanks! I'll try to find lots of different places to release these, so that your books might report back from several different towns and states. (This is a favorite of mine, so I'm pleased to have another release copy - though I admit that the cover-art on this one's a bit goofy-looking!)
As with so many classics (and this might be one of the hallmarks of a classic) I got very different things from the book on more recent readings than I had when I first read it in my teens.
[Some spoilers follow.]
Initially I was all sympathy for Heathcliff, and thought Cathy a fool not to stick with him; even when he turned brutal I had a tenderness for him, and I found the second generation of Wuthering Heights residents much less interesting than Heathcliff himself. But on later readings I began to find that second generation much more interesting, especially as they tried to work their way out of the cycle of violence and cruelty that they'd been born into. While I still felt sympathy for Heathcliff - who might have turned out much better without the abuse inflicted on him in his childhood - he still has to shoulder full responsibility for the extreme cruelty he inflicted on others. I see the story as the history of an abusive family rather than as a romance. It's still a ripping good yarn, though!
Side note (a very flippant side note) - here's the Wuthering Heights entry from Haiku U:
"Wild. Strange. A bit damp.
Heathcliff waits for Cathy's ghost.
Women. Always late."
