Jess Moulson wakes up with fragments of memory, a surgically re-constructed face, and the accusations that she killed a child living in her apartment building. Horrified, but unable to find any proof that she is innocent, she is petrified through her court proceedings and sentenced to prison. Once she gets there though, she starts experiencing strange things, seeing the boy she fears she may have killed, reliving dreams from her childhood, and learning dark secrets of the inmates and wardens. There is an intricate web of plotting in the heart of the prison, and Jess, with all her strangeness, has just landed in the midst.

The premise of this book isn't all that strong. It seems to be part of the wave of fiction set in women's prisons that showed up when Orange is the New Black's popularity took off, and most of the characters and scenarios are not all that nuanced. The plot stumbles along and most of the "mystery" is easily solved with obvious clues.

Where it does shine is atmosphere. Set in a near-future version of the world, the author has the chance to use made-up tech to amplified an almost gothic tale. The reader spends a lot of time trying to sort out Jess's impressions, looking for proof of whether there are truly paranormal events happening or if Jess is simply as insane as some characters seem to think. The narrative waves conflicting, tantalizing tidbits that never quite answer the question directly, forcing the reader to chase ghosts, rumors, and secrets as doggedly as Jess.

I devoured (pun intended) The Girl With All The Gifts, so here's hoping that this one is just as good.
