This is not an ordinary book: it's a BookCrossing book! BookCrossing books are world travelers - they like to have adventures and make new friends...and every once in a while they even write home to say what they've been doing.

This is probably best described as a YA/tween book - a young boy must find a new home for his beloved dog and signs her up to join the army as a working dog in Vietnam. Since this book is for younger readers, not adults, Cracker's fate ultimately turns out to be better than what the vast majority of the Vietnam-era war dogs experienced.

Here's an article about some real K9 troops during the Vietnam War from National Geographic and here's a speech from the dedication of the war dog memorial at Fort Benning, where Rick and Cracker train in the book.
