This paperback was among the books donated to the local library to stock the Little Free Libraries in town. Interestingly, according to the author's note, it's a largely-different edition than the one first published; the first edition was tweaked by the publishers to add a love-interest and otherwise rearrange the story, and when Morrell came across his original manuscript he decided to reissue the book in its original form.

Not having read the other version I can't compare them, but this one was an effective horror story set in a small Wyoming town, and featuring a kind of fast-acting rabies that results in near-supernatural, werewolf-like foes. The tie-in to a long-thought-abandoned commune seemed a bit sketchy to me, but the descriptions of the initial infections and the incredibly swift spread - which featured a very traumatic series of events involving a young child and his family - were scary and riveting.

I left this book in this Little Free Library; hope someone enjoys it!
