I found this paperback in this Little Free Library in Haverhill MA while dropping off some books of my own, and nabbed it for another release copy.
This was a quick read. I'm giving it an extra point for sheer entertainment value, in the sense of "I can't believe this character's *supposed* to be this deranged"... This is part of a series about birdwatcher and amateur sleuth Lucy Wayles, an "older woman" [age unspecified, but her hair's white and her boyfriend's retired]. Interestingly, the stories are told by the boyfriend Markus, retired researcher into viral genetics and besotted would-be lover - but Lucy is so erratic and sometimes quite cruel that I have trouble accepting his besottedness. [No, wait - some people just love being yanked around. OK, makes sense.] I think the idea is that Lucy is so very brilliant (like Sherlock Holmes) that she can't be bothered to explain everything to Markus (Watson), and she's so dedicated to the pursuit of truth and justice that she has no problem with manipulating everyone she encounters, including making use of her lover's affections. Like I say, it makes for an entertaining ride - but not a comfortable one; while I could predict that Lucy was manipulating things, I didn't really enjoy the ways in which things worked out. There were several "quirky for the sake of quirkiness" conversations - and characters - and I couldn't help thinking that this might have made a better situation comedy than a book...
So. If you enjoy "lite-ish" mysteries with an "I can't believe they're doing this" quality, this might be the book for you!
