The Various Haunts of Men

I found this UK-edition paperback on the charity-sale shelves at a local Hannaford's. I've enjoyed other works by Hill, including The Woman in Black, The Man in the Picture, and - my favorite so far - her memoir about books, Howards End is on the Landing.
This book's more of a straightforward mystery, with nothing supernatural beyond the eerie quality of the fog on the Hill from which people begin disappearing. There are lots of characters here, including talented police officer Freya, Chief Inspector Serrailler, assorted local folk - including family members of Serrailler's - and a generous group of potential suspects.
The mood and character interactions were good, but I admit that by the conclusion - despite a rather shocking incident - I was underwhelmed; the author had gradually tipped off the reader as to who the killer was and what was being done to the victims, but somehow it just didn't feel like a satisfactory payoff to me. Ah, well!

I'm sending this to BCer mcsar in Canada, as part of the US/Canada wishlist tag game. Enjoy!
