Vaguely recall this from a bookclub, but have no memory of the book. As it is on the 1001 books list, I will add it to Mt TBR.

David Lurie is an academic who has an affair with a young student. Rather than deal with the disgrace, he resigns and invites himself to the home of his daughter. They share an uncomfortable life together, she is dealing with her lesbian lover abandoning her and then they are subject to a home invasion and her rape by some local black neighbours.
An interesting expose on black/white issues in South Africa and the rise in black power.

I can’t say I enjoyed this book, it is not that sort of novel. It certainly has an impact on you. David Laurie is a middle aged twice divorced man, leading a comfortable easy life teaching romantic poetry, until he seduces one of his students. He is now unemployed and goes to stay with his daughter Lucy on her small farm, and he settles into new routines, until this is disrupted when he and Lucy are victims of a violent attack in Lucy’s home. Things do not return to normal, how can they? He and Lucy grow further apart, and David does not know how to help her.
