I got this softcover from the ongoing charity-sale shelves at a local Hannaford's. (I'd read about Crowhurst in A Voyage for Madmen some years ago; it used this book as a reference.)
The story's a compelling one, of a man caught up in an increasingly desperate attempt to preserve his family from ruin after he basically bet their future on a solo around-the-world sailing race. How this all came about, the nature of Crowhurst himself, the intricate layers of deceit that eventually trapped him... it's an almost Shakespearian tragedy, with a cascade of events beyond Crowhurst's control that removed his options one by one. (Or so he perceived; I'm sure his family would have preferred him to take the route that left him alive, however humiliated and financially strapped.)
[There have been several film versions of Crowhurst's story, including a documentary and a 2018 drama, but those were not explicitly based on this book. However, the 1982 French film The Roaring Forties was adapted from this book, though somewhat loosely.]
