I love horses and ride every week, and although I love most things about them, I am not so keen on racing as a sport. So I was a little reluctant to watch the film, however it is now on my favourites list, so why wouldn’t I give the book a go too.

This is a great read, it gives you plenty of background and details without ever detracting from the story, although in the early part of the book I felt some of the background was a little unnecessary. The way the jockeys treated themselves was shocking particularly to stay at the right weight, although I can slightly relate to desire to ride despite aches and pains. The descriptions of the races were very well done, you felt you were there with them and could feel the tension. I just wish they had left the book on a high and not gone on to explain what happened in the years after the big race.
