I have bought this from my local SH-bookshop probably 25+ years ago. I'm pretty sure I liked it, but noticed just now that I haven't finished it. It is on 6of8's wishlist, so I'm trying to re-read it before the April BC-Covention in Bordeaux and get a courier for the book. I just can't go to conventions before I've read what I've already got from the previous two. Besides I do not like Red, red wine (by U2 or who was it?).
Bats in the belfry... I would not go into bat caves, if you thread on millions of creepy crawly things which wait for the bats to drop down or you get pied and pooed on. And there is also the danger of rabies as a bonus. A Finnish batman died of rabies some ten-fifteen years ago and he had never been bitten by an animal, but he had spent lots of time in exotic bat caves. I think wise men came to the conclusion that the virus must have been airborne in a cave full of bats, but weather it penetrated the victim through his mucous membranes or a cut in the skin was and remains an open question. Last year two rabid bats were found in opposite sides of Finland, so again we have the alert to vaccinate all cats and dogs.
What what what?
The book claims that "Finnish peasants once believed that their souls rose from their bodies while they slept and flew around the countryside as bats, then returned to them by morning."
Never heard of this and I'm pretty sure I would have, if this had been a common belief. I wonder if she is mixing us with some other country, wouldn't be the first time.

I will be taking this book to go on the RABCK table at the Bordeaux Convention.
Putting on the RABCK table at the Convention.
So cool to have a wishlist surprise from kirjakko! Thanks to you and Poodlesister for this book. It looks like fun!
I really enjoyed this book and the deep dive into the worlds of bats, crocodilians, whales, and penguins. The author is a gifted wordsmith, with vivid descriptions of these different universes. And her passion for nature shines through, reminding the reader that these alien cultures are actually intimately connected to our world. And mankind, in our collective ignorance and arrogance, is destroying the world we all live in and these amazing creatures besides. I came away feeling as if I had accompanied the author on her adventures, but also like I need to do each of them myself. Highly recommend.

I picked this book from the book pile at the June, BCinDC meet-up. This book looks very interesting to me. I love bats, they eat mosquitoes and other pesky insects. They are brilliant to watch although sadly and alarmingly I have not seen any bats in my area for years now. Bats are having such a hard time surviving in the US because of habitat loss and the deadly fungus that causes white-nose syndrome.
