I bought this from the Scope charity shop in Knaresborough yesterday because I try to read at least two nonfictions a month and needed to restore my diminishing supplies. I chose this because the life and times of Samuel Pepys has always fascinated me. I think I've read extracts from his writings before, maybe even this collection, but that's no reason not to read them again . . . .

Amazon Editorial Review: "This anthology, containing extracts from Samual Pepys Diary is published to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the great diarist's death. Passages are collected together by subject, providing a fresh look at some of the themes that run through the massive complete work. Robert and Linnet Latham's presentation allows the reader to become absorbed in a single topic without interruption, often providing new insight into Pepys's private and public life. We see Pepys the man of fashion, the booklover, the musician, the theatre-goer, Pepys the husband and Pepys the public servant, at work and at leisure."

Interesting, but not particularly easy to read. The unfamilar language and writing style takes quite a bit of concentration. Not something you can read for long without taking a break, more of a dipping in and out of book, a page or two a day for as long as it takes. It is worth the effort, though!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

I left this on the well-stocked shelves of the Roecliffe red telephone box book exchange/community library this afternoon while taking the scenic route home from York, via lunch at Beningbrough Hall :-)

Well over a million people around the world give their books a unique BookCrossing IDentity number (BCID) before sending them out to find new readers. Since the start of the scheme in April 2001 over twelve million such books have been put into circulation. This is one of them!

Our hope is that we can track the progress of our books once they've left our hands - and that's possible if finders like you visit the website, key in the BCID and leave a comment, however long or short. It's fun, it doesn't have to cost anything, although the site always appreciates donations towards running costs, and you can remain anonymous if you wish. You don't have to join but if you do you'll be able to number and track your own books!
