Blurb: On an autumn day in 1686, eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman arrives at a grand house in Amsterdam to begin her new life as the wife of wealthy merchant Johannes Brandt. Though curiously distant, he presents her with an extraordinary wedding gift; a cabinet-sized replica of their home. It is to be furnished by an elusive miniaturist, whose tiny creations ring eerily true.

As Nella uncovers the secrets of her new household, she realises the escalating dangers they face. The miniaturist seems to hold their fate in her hands - but does she plan to save or destroy them?

An intriguing & compelling read which while, beautifully written & evocative at times, ultimately left me dissatisfied.

I have no idea how historically correct this book was but to be honest I don't really care as long as I'm enjoying what I'm reading. While parts of the book evoked a good impression of what life may have been like, the attitudes of the characters in some parts seemed too modern in outlook. I'm not wholly convinced that Cordelia's somewhat cavalier attitude to her employers would have been tolerated but on the other hand, Marin's initial treatment of the innocent & naive Nella was very plausible....& had me fuming!

The relationships between the family, servants & acquaintances, were not how they first appeared, although none of the revelations were a great surprise as it was obvious the way things were going. The same can't be said however, about the Miniaturist & the surprise gifts, or prophecies or whatever they were...to be honest I just don't get the role the that the Miniaturist was playing - what were they trying to achieve? Maybe I missed some subtleties or should have read between the lines but I would preferred it spelt out in black & white!
