Journal Entry 1 by chirpydalek from Manning, Western Australia Australia on Monday, January 29, 2018
Hoping to pass it on at a BC meetup in February, it’s boring and all the racial slurs make me uncomfortable. I realise it’s from another era but it seems unnecessary.
An Australian classis, so I'll give it a go
So I had no idea what this was about, but knew it was a classic, that it was WW2-era, and that the 'Alice' of the title referred to Alice Springs. And I loved it!
It was such an unexpected tale, with a smart, and well developed female lead character, and some really interesting insights into both WW2 in Malaysia and outback Australia in the 1950s. I take note of chripydalek's comments about the racist slurs - this is a very white centred novel, and mired in the attitudes of when it was written (1950s).
This was requested in the VBBOz so I will be sending it off soon.
