Million Dollar Baby

I got this paperback from a local thrift store. Originally published as Rope Burns, it's a collection of stories based on boxing, one of which inspired the 2004 film.
While I've read a few books about boxing - historical as well as fictional - it's never been one of my favorite topics. These tales, and the informative introduction by the author, do express the factors that draw people to the sport, both as competitors and as spectators, and the characters are clearly and starkly drawn. Good, effective writing, with some wrenching twists...
[There's a TV Tropes page on the film, with some entertaining tidbits.]
