Book Burble: "When the battered body of a young woman is discovered on a remote Greek island, the local police are quick to dismiss her death as an accident. Then a stranger arrives, uninvited, from Athens, announcing his intention to investigate further. His methods are unorthodox, and he brings his own mystery into the web of dark secrets and lies. Who has sent him, on whose authority is he acting, and how does he know of dramas played out decades ago?"

‘Powerfully atmospheric … Zouroudi proves a natural as the dark arts of writing euro-crime’ INDEPENDENT
‘Absorbing and beautifully written … reveals the savage, superstitious reality behind the pretty façade that is all that most of us know of any Greek Island’ LITERARY REVIEW
‘A fantastic tale of passion and corruption … wonderfully written’ WOMAN’S OWN

Those quotes above from the book back cover some of what I had thought of this book, read another copy in September 2016 and though it brilliant. My notes:

And my goodness, by page 16 we’ve got through, brisk, brutal and blunt! Hmmm, I’ll see how this goes, unorthodox certainly fits when describing this investigators modus operandi, and there seems a surprising dark toned humour at play… No dates so far though there is a helicopter and an old black Toyota on the first page so maybe a fairly contemporary setting?

Wow, this sure packs a stealthy punch. Zouroudi has eschewed frenetic pace and whip-fast action for very slow burn and offers time for acute observation and poignant reflection with devastating effect. Initially intrigued I became increasingly less inclined to put this down, to the point I realised I had stayed with the book till it was finished in favour of many urgent little tasks being accomplished. Immediately on gathering my thoughts I want to race out to find more by this author. Perhaps reading them in sequence might offer revealing details on the investigative stranger, which would be pleasing, but frankly I’ll dive into which ever I find next as this was so excellent. Brilliant in a darkly glittering way this portrays a distinctly strong flavour of Greece and the complexities of living on a small island that I feel convinced realistically describe that life.

I did add the rest of the series to my BC wish list but have yet to chase them up. . . registering this 2nd copy has popped them into my mind again!
