I picked this up at this afternoon's meetup in Cambridge - looks entertaining!

Later: Quite an entertaining little book, despite - or because of - the way it manages to include almost zero factual content {wry grin}. There are throwaway bits such as a reference to John "Duke" Wayne, "whose real name was Marion Zimmer Bradley"... And in the factoids-about-each-of-the-Western-states there are lists of amusing town names, of which maybe half are actually real towns. (I've been to Point of Rocks in Wyoming, and Tensleep's a real one too, but the others... yeah.)

Some of the tidbits are a bit too accurate, though. For Arizona, "you'll find (A) heat, (B), the Grand Canyon, and (C) what's left of the Colorado River after California gets done with it". Ouch.

Lots of the book made me giggle, with occasional groans. In the section on regional sports, rodeo events come up, including bull riding - and that section gets increasingly silly, wrapping up with the reason why bulls, "particularly those from Chicago", are among the highest-paid of all sports figures.

So, yeah, not the book for someone who wants to know about the actual West, but very amusing in its own right!
