The Year of the Dog (A Pacy Lin Novel)

I got this book for a release challenge, as this is the Year of the Dog. It's about a Chinese-American girl whose family came to New York from Taiwan, and touches on the changes in her life in this Year of the Dog. There are family celebrations, a new friend at school, some surprises regarding her friend's family's meals, a disappointment at the school play, and more. Most of it's cheerful and upbeat, but there are some thought-provoking bits - among them, when a classmate tells our heroine that she can't play Dorothy in "Wizard of Oz" because Dorothy wasn't Chinese, Pacy decides to write a book of her own in which the main characters are
Chinese. The book project takes on a life of its own, with entertaining results.
[There's a TV Tropes page
on the Eastern Zodiac, with some entertaining tidbits]
